We discussed the extreme poverty and violence many Indian citizens face on a daily basis. Students then wrote about ways India can protect its citizens, and provide opportunity for people in all communities.

As teachers, we constantly refer to our students as "our kids." We worry about our students, encourage them, teach them; they make us laugh, they inspire us to be the people we were destined to become. Ms. Palatka sent us this image in an email today; it is very, very true. On a related note, here is an article describing why teachers become educators: http://schoolsofthought.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/17/my-view-above-all-teachers-are-in-it-for-the-kids/ It's very common to hear and read many grammar mistakes in modern society. However, with a little research, we can clarify rules and remember how to both write and speak proper English. There are numerous blogs on the internet that discuss grammar and try to preserve culture. Here is one written by a concerned "grammarist" from Australia: http://wheredoesthebreadgo.blog.com/2010/08/31/grammar-isnt-the-afls-strong-point/. Calvin and Hobbes comics are a great example of being "facetious." What is meant by the the term facetious? Make sure to check these helpful internet sources for assistance. For today's assignment, I would like you to type one page (double spaced) on one of the following topics:

James Geary's illustrated metaphor usage for us today in his Ted Talk. Simile- making a comparison using like or as metaphor- something considered a symbol of something else ex.: Donald Trump considers himself a jackal in the boardroom. Students will write their own similes and metaphors on our blog below. I'd like you to use the 10 colors for the lines of your poem/topics in your paragraphs. Please be creative with your color choices. :) aqua magenta fuchsia cyan neon green fusion orange electric blue sapphire ruby emerald opal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjQM8PzCEY0
In class today, we decided to discuss the origins of language and begin to decipher some of the tough, confusing grammar rules in the English language. Students had some awesome ideas about foreign words we've adopted in English. I'm very impressed by your thoughts today, everyone! :) We enjoyed the brilliance of today's Ted Talks. First, we watched the joy of lexicography with Erin McKean.
http://www.ted.com/talks/erin_mckean_redefines_the_dictionary.html Then, we talked about stigma in the U.S. We focused on the way people with mental illness, such as many our veterans, are treated. http://www.ted.com/talks/elyn_saks_seeing_mental_illness.html Today, students will either respond to what they learned from the Ted Talks, or write about an important issue they would like to address. Obviously we have some fantastic writers here at HLCE! Below, you will find a couple of our student authors in the spotlight.
