As mentioned in The Week, "cancer remains the No. 2 killer in the U.S., after heart disease." Although a great deal of progress has been made in cancer treatments, scientists and doctors still have a long way to go. Many people have been affected by cancer whether they have suffered from the illness themselves, or have a friend or relative who has fought the illness, and hopefully won. Immunology treatments mentioned in the article are very encouraging. This trend suggests that new types of medical care will be able to save the lives of those battling illness.
A major concern for healing is the fact that immunotherapy medicines "can cost up to $150,000 per year" and are often only available to those in clinical trials. This situation is grim because many people would not be able to afford medication needed to survive, and would not have access to treatment since trials are not an option for everyone. Fortunately, there are other genetic advancements and testing that can help determine what therapies would best benefit each individual. It is reassuring that these efforts are made and that science and medical advancements are constantly changing. Cancer is a devastating illness; however, with access to appropriate, innovative treatment, recovery is possible.
