Why do preppers go to these lengths to prepare for a hypothetical "doomsday?" If you had massive amounts of money, would you prep for the worst? How exactly would you spend money to prepare? If you would not "prep," why would you make this choice?

If you won 500k, what are two ways you could spend the money that would benefit yourself, your family, and others?
Article response example:
Doomsday bunkers have become a trend in the United States due to fears over some type of epidemic, nuclear blast, or violent invasion. While some find creating these bunkers extreme and unnecessary, others jump on the bandwagon, eager to ensure safety for themselves and their families. According to Gary Lynch of the Rising S Company "2016 sales for their custom high-end bunkers grew 700% compared to 2015." In addition to providing safety measures, those who are incredibly wealthy seek luxury accommodations for their bunkers and spend enormous amounts of money in creating their safe havens. In my opinion, wealth could be useful in a variety of ways, but I would not choose to spend my money in this fashion. While the potential for danger certainly exists, I, myself do not have paranoia about this kind of event occurring.
Additionally, current interesting trend is the creation of communal bunkers. As Stamp mentioned, Vivos xPoint in South Dakota "will be equipped with all the comforts of a small town, including a community theater, classrooms, hydroponic gardens, a medical clinic, a spa and a gym." Although this sounds very luxurious and comfortable, one cannot help but wonder if this is an extraordinary waste of money for a disaster that may never happen. This notion raises other questions, such as what is the cost of maintaining these structures? What additional fees will bunker owners have to pay for upkeep of the facility? Upon careful consideration, surplus wealth could be put to much better use through maintaining one's home, paying college tuition for one's children, and giving money to worthy charities, as opposed to investing thousands of dollars in a potentially unneeded shelter.
