Today we will work on artistic haikus in recognition of our upcoming holidays. Remember, haikus consist of 3 lines- the first has 5 syllables, the second has 7, and the third has 5 again. Your theme must carry through/make sense throughout your haiku.

"The Story of an Hour"
1 paragraph- What choices did women have for their futures during the book's time period? After reading the short story, please write one paragraph on the back of your warm-up. What will freedom look like for you as an adult? How will you spend your time? What do you wish for? Please be on your best behavior today & make us proud! Don't forget to welcome Mrs. Anderson back from being gone for her procedure. I know she missed all of you.

Eng. 10- Death Row article After reading, students will each individually write a 2 paragraph response to the article. (There are prompts at the bottom of the page to help you organize your writing). When students are finished, they can begin writing a one page rough draft:
(3rd hr.) Eng. 12- Please read "Sweat" by Zora Neale Hurston as a class. On the back of students' rough drafts, I'd like them to tell me about the similarities/differences they notice between Hurston's novel and short story.*** Students will then work on a one page rough draft: Imagine that our novel's protagonist was male instead of female. Would he be the talk of the town every time he had a new love interest? Would people gossip about him the same way they gossip about Janie? Create a narrative detailing your new character's daily life in Eatonville. (4th hr.) Eng. 11- Please read "At Home" by Chekhov as a class. What connections do students notice between this story and A Separate Peace? (Please have students add their thoughts to the back of today's writing assignment). When finished, they can type one page (12 pt.) analyzing either Gene, Finny, or one of the characters from the short story. Students may also compare and contrast characters from both tales if they choose.*** (5th hr.) Eng. 9- Students need to write a 2 paragraph critique of "The Scholarship Jacket" which we read on Thursday. Which lines did you find most interesting/unique/entertaining? Which lines captured your interest as a reader/created strong imagery for her audience? When students are finished, they can begin writing a one page rough draft:
